Those Little Helpers Inside ChatGPT Are Called GPTs

If you’ve poked around inside ChatGPT, you may have seen a section called GPTs and wondered what on earth that was. The name is not helpful. It sounds like alphabet soup. But the idea underneath is actually simple and kind of friendly.

A GPT, in this case, is a little pre-built helper that somebody already set up for one particular job. Instead of starting from a blank screen every time and explaining what you need from scratch, you open a helper that’s already been pointed at a task. Somebody else did the setup work. You just use it.

Think of it like the difference between a general handyman and the neighbor who has quietly become the person everyone calls about one specific thing. The handyman can do a lot. The neighbor just happens to be great at fixing a running toilet. GPTs are like that second one.

Real examples make this clearer. There are recipe helpers where you tell it what’s sitting in your fridge and it suggests dinner, and it already knows to ask about allergies because it was set up that way. There are writing coaches that help you tighten up your sentences without rewriting your whole voice away. There are math tutors for grandkids doing homework, set up to explain the steps instead of just blurting out the answer, which any parent will tell you is the difference between helping and cheating. People have made thousands of these for all sorts of niches, some genuinely useful, some a bit silly.

You’ll find them inside ChatGPT, in a section for exploring GPTs, where you can search by what you’re trying to do. Most are free to try if you have a ChatGPT account. You click one, it opens like a fresh conversation, and you talk to it the normal way.

Here’s the part I most want you to hear. You do not need to build one. Building them is optional homework for people who enjoy that sort of thing. All the value for most of us is in just using the ones that exist. And honestly, plain ChatGPT on its own handles most everyday jobs fine. Think of GPTs as a shortcut worth trying when you keep doing the same task over and over. If you find one that fits, lovely. If not, you haven’t lost anything but a few minutes of poking around.
